Fossil fuel use, emissions hit record highs in 2023, industry report says

Global fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions hit record highs last year, while renewables' share of energy consumption reached 14.6 percent, up 0.4 percent from the previous year.
Nick Wayth, CEO of the Energy Institute, noted the slow progress of the transition from fossil fuels to renewables, highlighting the diverse energy stories in different geographies.
China led in coal consumption globally while India surpassed Europe and North America in coal use for the first time. Coal consumption in Europe and North America hit lowest levels since 1965.
China and India experienced substantial increases in natural gas consumption, while Europe saw a decrease. China also dominated new wind and solar capacity installations globally.
