There were 1.4 million card transactions by Irish visitors in the UK in August, an increase of 11pc year-on-year. The UK overtook Spain as the number one destination for Irish spending, with the value of expenditure by Irish visitors to the UK 8pc higher than the previous August. There was no change on spending in Spain between August 2024 and August 2025, AIB said."
"August is typically a month where people are on holidays and it's interesting to see spend by Irish visitors to the US has decreased significantly. And there is movement in the top two destinations abroad for AIB customers, with the UK topping the list, as evidence of Ireland's close travel links with the UK. This information is vital for businesses, enabling them to plan for both peak and off-peak periods throughout the year to effectively meet their customers' needs."
Grocery spending rose most in Roscommon (7.4%), followed by Offaly and Louth (6.6%). The smallest grocery increases were in Clare (1.4%) and Longford (1.6%). AIB customers recorded 1.4 million card transactions in the UK in August, an 11% year-on-year increase, and the UK overtook Spain as the top destination with expenditure 8% higher than the previous August. Spending in Spain showed no change year-on-year while US spending by AIB customers fell 18% in August. Domestic restaurant and takeaway expenditure rose 8%, with 83% on premises and 17% via delivery apps or online. Data came from 85 million card transactions by AIB customers in store and online during August 2025.
