Doug Herrington joined Amazon in 2005 as vice president of consumables and rose to CEO of worldwide Amazon stores by 2022. He initially felt like he had joined a cult and even told his wife he did not understand what was happening. He later treated that skepticism as a rite of passage that improved his leadership. Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles define decision-making, behavior, collaboration, and problem-solving for leaders and helped align the company. The principles were not all written at the company's founding; many were formalized around 2002, and the culture evolved rather than being decreed.
