Amazon exec says the most important lessons from Jeff Bezos were the power of the 16 leadership principles he once dismissed as a 'cult' | Fortune
"I felt like I had joined a cult,"
"I told my wife, 'I don't understand what's going on,"
"I learned the power of using culture to get everybody on the same page. It just reduces friction if you know where everybody's coming from,"
"how we want our leaders to make decisions, and behave, and work with each other, and solve problems when they're at their best"
Doug Herrington joined Amazon in 2005 as vice president of consumables and rose to CEO of worldwide Amazon stores by 2022. He initially felt like he had joined a cult and even told his wife he did not understand what was happening. He later treated that skepticism as a rite of passage that improved his leadership. Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles define decision-making, behavior, collaboration, and problem-solving for leaders and helped align the company. The principles were not all written at the company's founding; many were formalized around 2002, and the culture evolved rather than being decreed.
