Atkinson, who has served as a top assistant for the Golden State Warriors under head coach Steve Kerr since the 2021-22 season, has been granted permission to interview with Cleveland for its head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
However, Atkinson has remained a popular name around the NBA in recent coaching cycles. He posted a 118-190 record in four seasons as Brooklyn's head coach from 2016-20, helping the team through a difficult rebuild in his first two seasons.
In Cleveland, Atkinson could reunite with former players Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert, who were both drafted during his tenure in Brooklyn.
