Williamsburg Organizers Rally Support for Northside BID
"About 20 years ago, the Greenpoint-Williamsburg waterfront was rezoned, and since then we've seen a phenomenal amount of new development, new businesses and new activity in the neighborhood. Williamsburg is a destination for people from all over the city and beyond, and our infrastructure just hasn't kept pace."
"I don't think there is another community in all of New York City that has the same density in terms of businesses, residents and visitors as the north side that lacks a business improvement district. So we need these supplemental services to keep our neighborhood clean and green and dynamic."
A proposed Northside Business Improvement District in Williamsburg is entering its critical voting phase, with ballots being mailed to property owners and businesses. The district would cover the area from North 15th Street to Grand Street and Bedford Avenue to the East River. If approved, it would fund enhanced services including daily sanitation, graffiti removal, street beautification, and community programming through assessments on local properties. Supporters argue the district is necessary because rapid neighborhood development over the past 20 years has outpaced city services. Council Member Lincoln Restler emphasizes that Williamsburg's exceptional density of residents, businesses, and visitors makes it unique among NYC neighborhoods without a BID, requiring supplemental services to maintain cleanliness and vitality.
