Volunteer ambulance organization, BRAVO, turns 50
Briefly

"None of us really thought we'd be here this long," Anthony Napoli, president of BRAVO since 2019, explained how the organization's long service exceeded initial expectations, rooted in 1975 volunteer origins due to EMS shortages explaining the early motivations.
"In the early 1970s, New York City was going through a rough time with ambulance service availability in the 911 system," Napoli recalled, emphasizing the critical need for services like BRAVO at that time due to abysmal emergency response times.
Led by Community Board Chairman Hank Vogt, early civic leaders gathered documentation justifying local need for ambulance services while securing necessary approvals to establish BRAVO, highlighting local effort comitted to community health and safety.
BRAVO opened its doors to the community on July 4, 1974, responding to initial calls and establishing a legacy of reliability in emergency responses, with services offered around the clock, marking a significant improvement from prior to its founding.
