The Brooklyn Lace Guild, founded in 2016, has cultivated a passionate community surrounding the craft of lace-making, gathering at the Old Stone House in Park Slope every Friday. With nearly 70 members, including beginners and young enthusiasts, the guild aims to preserve the intricate art of lace amidst modernity. Co-founders Devon Thein and Elena Kanagy-Loux highlight the human connection and confidence lace-making fosters, emphasizing its distinctiveness compared to machine-made alternatives. The guild serves as a historical nexus for lovers of textile arts and promotes inclusivity within the craft.
A lot of our members are younger and are beginners. We are really having quite a renaissance of interest in lace and I see it all over the place.
People have a lot of anxieties about things like AI, but this is something that really is so human and it's something that can't be done by machine in the same way.
It's a way that we reconnect with our bodies and our self-confidence, and that we reconnect with each other as a community. That makes us feel really human.
We aim to preserve the tradition of lace-making while also bringing together a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about the craft.
