Sunset Park Senior Center Faces Closure After Rent Spike
Briefly

The United Senior Citizens of Sunset Park is confronting potential closure because of a significant proposed rent increase of 70%, which the center cannot sustain. Executive director Grisel Amador emphasized that the center offers essential services such as bilingual case workers and meals that many local seniors depend on. The New York City Department for the Aging, which provides funding, stated that budget negotiations fall on the center. The community is worried about losing a vital resource as the lease expiration approaches this June.
"This is a house for everyone, this is a place where you feel comfortable," Hector Gonzalez, one of the center's regulars told the TV station.
Amador said the rent increase is more than the New York City Department for the Aging, which funds the center, can afford.
The United Senior Citizens of Sunset Park said it may have to shut down because of a proposed 70% rent increase after 50 years servicing the community.
The Department for the Aging told News 12 that while it will give advice, things like budget and rent negotiations are the responsibility of the center.
