Sun and surf return as Brooklyn's beaches open for swimming on May 24 * Brooklyn Paper

Brooklyn's beaches will officially open for swimming on May 24, with Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Manhattan Beach welcoming lifeguards who will oversee swimming from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until September 7. While the weather is expected to be cool, the ocean temperature remains low at around 61°F, posing challenges for casual swimmers. Due to a longstanding lifeguard shortage, some beach sections may be intermittently closed, though city officials are seeking to accommodate as much swimming space as possible.
"As with every year, visitors may see sections of beach closed off for swimming/capacity restrictions based on daily lifeguard staffing," a Parks Department spokesperson told Brooklyn Paper.
Mayor Eric Adams stated that the city's goal is 'not to' close the city's beaches and pools, emphasizing their commitment to keeping them open.
