Three new elevators were installed at each station, making the Metropolitan Avenue/Lorimer Street stations in Williamsburg fully accessible under the American with Disabilities Act, a significant improvement for riders with mobility aids.
The elevators are equipped with accessible emergency communication systems, and additional features like ADA-accessible boarding areas, tactile strips, and new staircases were added to enhance accessibility further.
MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo emphasized the importance of making the transit system more accessible, stating that opening these two accessible stations is a significant step towards achieving an accessible subway system.
New York City Transit highlighted the benefits of the project, explaining that the addition of new elevators and stairwells at Metropolitan Av-Lorimer St will not only improve accessibility but also enhance customer flow in the critical transfer station.
