The Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in East Flatbush officially opened to the public in February after more than a decade of community advocacy. The $141 million, 74,000-square-foot facility is Brooklyn's largest recreation center. A recognition event on March 8 honored the builders, designers, and advocates who brought the project to completion, with attendance from former Mayor Bill de Blasio, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and other elected officials. The center features a six-lane competition pool, three-lane walking track, full-size gymnasium, multiple fitness rooms, teaching kitchen, youth and teen spaces, and a media lab. The facility is expected to serve over 41,000 residents within a 15-minute radius and achieved LEED v4 Platinum sustainability standards, making it the city's first public building to reach this certification level.
