The 44th annual Brooklyn Half Marathon witnessed over 28,000 participants on May 17, struggling through brutal heat and humidity, with temperatures soaring to 66°F and 90% humidity at the start. Tragedy struck when Charles Rogers, a 31-year-old runner, suffered cardiac arrest near Mile 8 and later died. In the wake of the event, the running community demonstrated resilience, with camaraderie on display as runners assisted one another amid the difficulties, highlighting the supportive nature of the crowd despite the challenges posed by the weather.
After the race, I found out what had happened, and it hits home... you never know. You feel the least bit of discomfort, a lot of people say you want to push forward, but you really shouldn't.
The conditions were certainly not working in our favor. Between the heat, humidity, the unexpected sun that came out... Everybody - strangers, right? - rallied around each other.
