Restored Victorian greenhouse links Green-Wood Cemetery to its living neighbours
""Having a part of Green-Wood outside of our gates meets people in the community where they are, and it allows them to feel more comfortable and learn to love Green-Wood the way so many of us who wander these paths already do.""
"The Green-House, located across from the cemetery's main entrance, is centered around a restored cast-iron and glass structure, the only surviving Victorian commercial greenhouse in the city."
Green-Wood Cemetery opened in 1838 as part of the American rural cemetery movement, providing a serene escape from urban life. Nearly 190 years later, it remains a refuge for walking, birdwatching, and cultural events. The new Green-House welcome center, opening on April 18-19, enhances community interaction. It features a restored Victorian greenhouse, acquired in 2012, and aims to foster a deeper connection between the cemetery and the surrounding neighborhood.
