Repair not rebuild: Brooklyn and Queens neighborhood groups call on DOT to end plans to majorly overhaul the BQE
Briefly

A coalition of local environmental and neighborhood organizations is urging city officials to abandon plans for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) overhaul, emphasizing the negative long-term impact on communities. In a letter addressed to Gov. Kathy Hochul and other leaders, the BQE Environmental Justice Coalition criticized the NYC Department of Transportation's multi-billion-dollar project to rebuild the aging highway. They argue it will perpetuate environmental harm, and they aim to make their concerns known before any official environmental reviews commence.
We are urging you to halt NYC DOT's proposed multi-billion-dollar project to rebuild and potentially expand the BQE's triple cantilever, a project that would embed this malignant roadway in our communities for generations to come.
Lara Birnback emphasized the importance of sending the letter before official environmental reviews of the proposed project begin to voice their concerns over the DOT's plans.
