According to the Advocates for Children of New York report, New York City has seen an alarming trend in homelessness among students, with about 146,000 homeless during the 2023-2024 school year. This is the ninth consecutive year of over 100,000 children experiencing homelessness, significantly affecting their education and well-being.
The homelessness crisis is particularly intense in neighborhoods like Brownsville and Bushwick, where the rate of children experiencing homelessness remains exceedingly high, pointing to broad socioeconomic challenges.
The report highlighted that a significant portion—41%—of these homeless students lived in shelters, while more than half were classified as 'doubled up,' indicating increasing pressures on families due to economic hardship.
In the Bronx, one in six public school students experienced homelessness, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions in the most affected districts, such as District 23 in Brownsville.
