"When my sister was killed, they really showed me what family meant, because they took [her] case very seriously," he said. "The guy was caught within a few days. You know, I just wanted to be able to do the same thing for someone else's family."
"I was just happy. I was shocked," he said. "[It] shows that your work doesn't go unnoticed. Some days may be hard, some may be easier, but people still notice what you do."
""opened his eyes""
Dewayne Stewart received the Sixth Avenue Bible Baptist Church's Police Officer of the Year award for outstanding community contributions. Stewart is a five-year NYPD veteran who accepted the award from Senior Pastor Richard Johnson on Oct. 26 in the presence of his family and 78th Precinct colleagues. Stewart joined a paid NYPD Police Cadet program in college for the pay, but the experience opened his eyes to police work. His sister, nurse Samantha Stewart, was murdered in July 2018; detectives arrested Danueal Drayton days later. The detectives' dedication inspired Stewart to join the NYPD and pursue justice for other families. Stewart described the award as unexpected and a sign that hard work is noticed.
