New York City is witnessing a rapid increase in micromobility vehicles, such as scooters, e-bikes, and mopeds. While they provide affordable transportation options, a significant concern revolves around many of these vehicles operating without proper licenses. Numerous incidents have been reported of mopeds illegally parked, driven on sidewalks, or lacking license plates, violating state traffic laws. Advocates are now pushing city lawmakers for more accountability to curb these unlawful operations, highlighting the need for safer streets for pedestrians and regulatory compliance among operators.
According to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), mopeds must be registered and cannot be used on sidewalks. E-bikes, while unregistered, follow similar laws.
During a series of walks through various NYC neighborhoods in May, amNewYork spotted over 50 mopeds illegally parked, weaving through pedestrians or operating illegally.
