New York City has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to recover $80 million in federal funds provided by FEMA to assist with the costs of an influx of asylum seekers. The lawsuit claims that the funds, awarded to cover expenses incurred since spring 2022, were unlawfully seized without notice. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the burden on the city and criticized the federal government's actions, stating that the clawback of funds is unfair, especially after significant taxpayer spending in immigration support.
Without a doubt, our immigration system is broken, but the cost of managing an international humanitarian crisis should not overwhelmingly fall onto one city alone.
The $80 million that FEMA approved, paid and then rescinded - after the city spent more than $7 billion in the last three years - is the bare minimum our taxpayers deserve.
