New York City has introduced a municipal e-bike trade-in program aimed at enhancing safety among food delivery workers. Part of a $2 million initiative by the Department of Transportation, the program allows workers to exchange uncertified e-bikes and illegal mopeds for safe, UL-certified models and spare batteries at no cost. This is in response to the hazardous nature of lithium-ion batteries, a leading cause of fires. The program, which is open to eligible NYC delivery workers, will improve both worker safety and public welfare.
Safer e-bikes, batteries and charging practices are key to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future and to protecting all New Yorkers from deadly fires.
Part of that work has focused on getting uncertified lithium-ion batteries off the streets, and we are grateful to the DOT for their work and partnership on an initiative we know will better protect delivery workers.
