NYC Bus And Subway Fare Evasions Drop
Briefly

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has reported a 67% revenue increase compared to 2021, attributed to rising ridership and measures to combat fare evasion. In the efforts to address evasion, modifications to turnstiles, the installation of delayed egress on emergency exits, and deployment of gate guards have played key roles. With fare revenue projected at $5 billion for 2024, the initiatives have led to significant decreases in evasion rates at affected stations. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of these strategies for benefiting both the transit system and its users.
"These numbers show that our comprehensive strategy to combat fare and toll evasion is working and system users and taxpayers are benefitting," Hochul said.
"We will continue to use all the tools at our disposal - including increased enforcement efforts and new infrastructure - to prevent fare evasion, hold perpetrators accountable and keep these numbers trending in the right direction."
