A new proposal by the city's Department of Transportation aims to permit mopeds with license plates on the Brooklyn and lower Queensboro bridges. This move is designed to enhance mobility for delivery workers who currently face restrictions limiting their access to these crossings. Currently, mopeds are not allowed on bridge roadways and bike lanes, which often leads to illegal crossings. The proposal explicitly excludes the Williamsburg and Manhattan bridges as well as e-bikes. A public hearing is set for April 14 to gather input from New Yorkers regarding the proposal.
The proposal would allow licensed mopeds to legally access the Brooklyn Bridge and the lower roadway of the Queensboro Bridge, enhancing transportation options for delivery workers.
Currently, mopeds cannot use bridge roadways or bike lanes, often forcing riders to take alternative routes or cross illegally, prompting this new initiative.
