The New York Community Trust is investing $150,000 in the Literacy Academy Collective, aiming to address low literacy rates among underserved youth in New York City.
'Last year, just half of the city's third through eighth graders achieved proficiency on state reading tests, with only 40% of Black and Latino children meeting the same standard,' education reports stated.
'For years, the city was using an approach to reading instruction that had no real research base behind it,' said Shawn Morehead, highlighting the need for better methods.
Education advocates believe the introduction of Literacy Academy Collective schools can serve as a vital bridge to achieving universal literacy success in city schools.
