NAMING THE LOST Memorials, alongside various community organizations, hosted a dedication ceremony for a COVID-19 public art memorial at Green-Wood Cemetery. Since May 2020, NTLM has memorialized pandemic victims across NYC through physical installations and online vigils. This yearâs memorial, entitled 'A Bridge, a Stitch, a Compass,' showcases a 200-foot art installation that honors over 1 million lives lost nationwide, with a special focus on those in NYC. The installation invites public participation, allowing visitors to create nameplates for loved ones, emphasizing collective remembrance and healing within the community.
The installation, titled 'A Bridge, a Stitch, a Compass: COVID Memorial for the Past, Present, and Future,' aims to honor lives lost and the ongoing effects of long COVID.
Artist Zamya Bumpus describes the memorial as a 'bridge routine crisis art' project, emphasizing art's role in connecting and navigating through difficult times.
Visitors are encouraged to participate by creating nameplates in memory of loved ones lost to COVID-19, fostering community remembrance and engagement.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed over 1 million lives in the U.S. and more than 50,000 in New York City, highlighting the importance of these memorial efforts.
