The MTA will stop selling MetroCards on December 31, 2025, transitioning to the OMNY system that allows riders to tap their way through fares. MTA Chair Janno Lieber emphasized the convenience and potential discounts available with OMNY, which already serves about 65% of riders. A notable feature is that riders can earn free rides after spending a certain amount. While the iconic MetroCard era closes, it will still be accepted into 2026, offering a continued transition for users.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber announced the MetroCard will retire by Dec. 31, 2025, making way for full-time use of the OMNY contactless payment system.
Tap-and-go, already the choice for 65% of our riders, is not only easier and more convenient to use, it also opens doors for new discounts.
With OMNY, riders receive free, unlimited rides for the rest of the week after paying $34 (or $17 for reduced-fare customers) in fares.
Although the MetroCard will be phased out, it will still be accepted going into 2026, with a definitive end date yet to be announced.
