MTA to Deploy Bus Inspectors as Fare Evasion Jumps to 50% of Riders

The MTA announced that inspectors will enforce fare payment on buses, where approximately 50% of riders currently evade payment, a significant rise since the pandemic.

Fare evasion increased sharply, jumping from 21% to about 50%, resulting in an estimated loss of $315 million last year due to unpaid bus fares.

The MTA stressed the importance of fare payment, as approximately 25% of its budget is reliant on rider fares, putting financial pressure on the agency.

To help combat fare evasion, the MTA has collaborated with other agencies to address persistent toll violators and implemented enforcement measures across its services.
