The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is set to reroute the F and M subway lines this fall to improve service reliability in New York City. This change, which involves swapping the East River crossing points, aims to reduce delays by eliminating the need for these trains to cross one another's tracks at a complex interlocking configuration known as Queensland. Transit leaders expect significant improvements in train flow, which will benefit commuters in Williamsburg and southern Brooklyn, crucially enhancing the overall efficiency of the service.
Allowing the trains to stay on the same tracks as opposed to crossing over there is just going to be huge," NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow told the Daily News.
The tunnel swap will keep the trains from having to cross over each other's route at a complicated bank of switch tracks under Long Island City known as the 36th St. interlocking.
