"Due to the amount of fire and the structural stability of the building, we removed our members and attacked the fire from the exterior, from the front and the rear with large caliber streams. A five-alarm fire ignited late Wednesday in a former coffee warehouse on Van Brunt Street in Red Hook and burned through the night into Thursday afternoon. The blaze destroyed a 25,000-square-foot collaborative artists' studio and exhibition space that housed the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists' Coalition. FDNY crews arrived around 11:30 p.m. and encountered heavy fire on the second through fourth floors and through the roof. Firefighters shifted to exterior attacks due to structural instability and employed large-caliber streams, including Marine 9. The fire was under control by 6 a.m.; two firefighters received minor treatment. Fire marshals are investigating.
