Marcia Ely, director of public programs at the Center for Brooklyn History, brings popular live programs to the 163-year-old institution
"Ely brings a storytelling ethos to her work as the director of public programs at the CBH to connect the public with the sometimes daunting institution. When the Brooklyn Historical Society merged with the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) to become CBH five years ago, the organization renewed its commitment to opening its arms to a broader public, fueled by BPL's deep dedication to public service."
"Introducing a recent public program at CBH, BPL President Linda E. Johnson celebrated the initiative. "As of two years ago, all Brooklynites and curious minds have free and open access to these resources," Johnson said. Opening the 145-year-old building and archive to the public was one major move toward connecting with more Brooklynites. The public programming that Ely designs is another."
Marcia Ely transitioned from television writing and producing to designing public programs as director of public programs at the Center for Brooklyn History, applying storytelling and casting techniques to program planning. The Brooklyn Historical Society merged with the Brooklyn Public Library five years ago to form CBH, expanding access and public service commitment. CBH opened its 145-year-old building and archives to the public and offers programs targeted to topics that interest Brooklyn residents. A book launch for Eugene Robinson drew over 100 diverse attendees to the redesigned Great Hall and offered a preview of the upcoming exhibition "The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered."
