Man who rammed a car into NYC Jewish site had recently connected with Chabad community, police say
""Earlier this month, Sohail attended a social gathering at this very same location," New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a news conference, noting there was video circulating online of that gathering."
""We believe that he was in Brooklyn last night to continue this attempt to connect with the Lubavitch Jewish community," Kenny said."
""clunky boots,""
""mental problems.""
A 36-year-old man repeatedly rammed his car into the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, damaging doors while worshippers were inside. The man had recently attended gatherings at the site and was recorded dancing with congregants during a prior visit. Police charged him with attempted assault as a hate crime because the building is a Jewish institution. He removed several blockades and cleared snow from a sidewalk before driving into the building and later claimed he lost control because of clunky boots. No injuries occurred, no weapons were found, and his father reported prior interest in converting to Judaism and struggles with mental problems.
