A COUNT OF HOMELESS PEOPLE sleeping on New York City streets and subways during the federally-mandated annual HOPE survey conducted on Jan. 23 found roughly 4,140 people, THE CITY reports. This is the highest number of unsheltered homeless people tallied since 2010.
Advocates caution the figure is a rough estimate and likely less than the actual number since it doesn't include people who may be sleeping in bank vestibules, fast food restaurants or emergency rooms.
The Adams administration says the 'consistency' in year-over-year numbers show their efforts at outreach and increasing shelter beds are working, WNYC reported Friday on its podcast NYC Now.
