Arts Gowanus is hosting an information session to discuss the availability of 120 subsidized artist studio spaces in Gowanus, stemming from a Community Benefits Agreement negotiated for local rezoning. The first studio space will launch at The Shop in spring 2023, with an application lottery currently open. In parallel, two fellowships aim to support low-income artists through free studio space, material assistance, and career support. The initiative addresses critical issues of affordability and accessibility in the art community, as highlighted by Executive Director Johnny Thornton.
"Affordability and access to workspace remains one of the biggest challenges facing working artists today," says Arts Gowanus Executive Director Johnny Thornton. "We're proud to provide multiple avenues for artists to acquire a sustainable place where they can create."
The studios will be available because of a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) that was negotiated by Arts Gowanus ahead of the Gowanus rezoning.
Roughly 120 subsidized studio spaces across 11 development sites in Gowanus will be offered, with the first opening at The Shop this spring.
Low-income Gowanus and Red Hook-based artists are invited to apply for the Arts Gowanus Artist Fellowship Program, which offers free studio space, material support, and career development.
