The newly constructed $24 million Department of Sanitation facility in Gowanus can store 6 million pounds of road salt and process 600,000 pounds of compost annually. It supports expanded snow and composting operations in Brooklyn while facilitating the Gowanus Canal Superfund cleanup. Designed and built by the Department of Environmental Protection, the facility includes reinforced supports for 3,000 tons of salt and features solar panels for energy.
