Briefly

The overarching purpose of the work is to modernize the train signals on the G, dating back to the 1930s, to reduce delays. The G will adopt modern CBTC for faster and closer train movement.
MTA takes advantage of the 24/7 shutdown to conduct additional work, such as replacing old railroad ties with water-resistant composite ties and upgrading the interlocking systems.
