Former city Comptroller Scott Stringer has launched his campaign for mayor with a plan to generate 20,000 new affordable homes in five years, citing a pressing need for housing solutions.
"We all know it's broken. We all know that minimalism has become the norm. I think we need a mayor who has a track record of being a reformer and someone who knows how to drive results," Stringer told amNewYork Metro.
His housing plan aims to tackle the surge in rents and the scarcity of rental apartments with four strategies, including using eminent domain against negligent landlords.
Stringer calls the first prong of his affordable housing initiative 'Mitchell Lama 2.0', focusing on developing vacant city properties for at least 50% affordable housing for low- and middle-income families.
