Fire marshals are investigating the cause of an explosion in the basement of a one-story commercial building in Borough Park. The incident occurred Wednesday night and followed a separate neighborhood fire two days earlier. Firefighters arrived shortly after 7:30 p.m. and found heavy fire coming from the basement. One firefighter became trapped in the basement and was removed by the Firefighters Assist Search Team, then refused medical attention at the scene. About 70 firefighters from 21 units used three hose lines to control the main fire. Crews searched the building and found no additional victims. Con Edison cut power quickly, and crews continued extinguishing remaining fire and pulling ceilings until the blaze was brought under control around 8:45 p.m.
