The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating a tragic crash of a Mexican naval ship into the Brooklyn Bridge, which resulted in two fatalities and numerous injuries. Preliminary reports suggested the ship experienced a mechanical issue that led to loss of control. As the NTSB gathers data on the incident, they will not have full access to the ship or crew until further talks with the Mexican government progress. The NTSB aims to determine the cause of the vessel's errant navigation, where it unexpectedly turned north instead of heading south into the sea.
We are going to be accessing all the different electronic data to determine at what point the vessel began accelerating. We do have a bit of time where it was maintaining a constant speed of about two 2.3 knots, and then the speed began to increase, and that's something we will be looking into as part of our engineering assessment of the operation of the engine.
The ship was supposed to head south and sail out of the harbor into the sea but instead traveled north and ended up striking the bridge. Officials did not provide details on what happened to cause Cuauhtemoc to travel in the wrong direction.
