Garnett found the federal murder charge technically flawed, ending the Trump administration's effort to pursue execution. The killing involved UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. State prosecutors set a July 1 trial date. Mangione pleaded not guilty to state second-degree murder and nine other counts. New York abolished the death penalty in 2004.
