"It's hard to believe, but the horrific attack on the World Trade Center, in which so many innocent lives were senselessly cut short, was 23 years ago," said Assemblyman Colton in advance of the memorial.
"This memorial service will show how strong our community is and how those who faced great loss did so with incredible bravery," Councilmember Zhuang said.
On that day, approximately 2,600 perished at the Twin Towers, including 343 New York City firefighters and 71 members of law enforcement.
Over 4,300 survivors and first responders have succumbed in the years following the attacks to ailments caused by exposure to toxins released into the air, according to the World Trade Center Health Program.
