On Wednesday morning, an exploding lithium-ion battery in a Brighton Beach apartment caused a fire, resulting in one death and two injuries. The battery was charging in a bedroom when it failed.
FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito emphasized the severity of lithium-ion battery fires, stating, \'When lithium-ion batteries ignite, it's a much more serious, much more involved fire.\' He acknowledged the quick response prevented more injuries.
Chief Fire Marshal Dan Flynn reported that the investigation concluded the fire was caused by an unregulated battery, likely purchased online, urging citizens to store such devices safely.
Flynn advised New Yorkers to charge their lithium-ion batteries outside and call 911 immediately if one starts to catch fire, highlighting their tendency to ignite without warning.
