DSNY ramps up graffiti cleanup in Brooklyn
"Unfortunately, Brooklyn is our busiest borough when it comes to graffiti. Everything looks nice with a fresh coat of paint. This is literally a fresh coat of paint, so it just makes everything look new. clean.- and if we can do this all over the borough, it's a win for everybody,"
"I feel like a superhero- I put my cape on my mask on, I get to work- it makes you feel good- I take pride in it,"
""Even if it gets resprayed, we will be back and clean it up again," Lettera said, adding, "graffiti can be art, can be beautiful - but not when it's someone's home or private property.""
DSNY responded to over 3,000 311 calls to remove graffiti citywide since the start of the year, with roughly half of incidents in Brooklyn. The Graffiti-Free-NYC program added three crew shifts across morning, day, and afternoon after DSNY took over in 2023. Crews clean tags, obscenities, and other markings on private and commercial property, including recent work on two sides of a warehouse in East New York. Residents and property owners are advised to report graffiti via 311 repeatedly. Crews will return to repaint if graffiti is resprayed, and workers express pride in restoring clean appearances.
