Downtown Brooklyn Revamp Stalls Over Judges' Park Lot
A Columbus Park redesign in Downtown Brooklyn is delayed by a small parking lot reserved for state-court judges. Officials and neighborhood groups say the lot sits on parkland and that judges’ refusal to relocate their cars is holding up Phase 1. City leaders have $21 million available for early upgrades intended to make the underused plaza safer and more inviting. Design plans would replace the lot with a sloped lawn, a pavilion, and amenities including a playground, dog run, skate facility, new trees, seating, accessible water features, and a one-story building with restrooms and concessions. Court officials oppose removal, saying the lot provides necessary security and that alternatives do not offer comparable protection and proximity.
"The Office of Court Administration is not sold on giving up the asphalt. The current lot, a spokesperson told News 12, "provides the necessary security for our judges who are under increasing threats." Court officials say every alternative floated so far falls short on protection and proximity for judges arriving at and leaving the courthouse."
