DOJ Sues NY Leaders Over Immigration Policies; Feds Take Back $80M That Was Allotted For Shelters

On February 12, 2025, U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced that the DOJ sued New York officials for not enforcing federal immigration laws. The lawsuit specifically targets Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder regarding the Green Light Law, which restricts state authorities from sharing personal information with federal immigration officials. Bondi claims the law is unconstitutional and seeks a court order to prevent its enforcement. In response, Hochul labeled the lawsuit a distraction and emphasized that affected individuals still have their rights protected under current laws.
All the attorneys general and state officials, including myself, who are standing with immigrant communities should be proud of the progress we have made.
