Good Call NYC, founded by Jelani Anglin, addresses the lack of legal support for marginalized communities during arrests. After his own challenging experience with the justice system at 16, Anglin, along with community organizers, identified a pressing need for timely legal representation. Since its inception in 2016, Good Call has supported over 10,000 individuals citywide through its 24/7 hotline, significantly impacting arrest rates and promoting justice for those most affected by systemic inequalities.
As a youth, I always understood what it meant to have police interaction. Growing up in Queens, you see it happen all the time, but I never forgot what it was to be arrested as a young Black man.
We launched in one borough, we were pounding pavement - handing out cards, talking to people in the community, standing with them in solidarity.
