Following the malfunction of the Coney Island Cyclone, which left riders needing evacuation, the city has ordered the ride to remain closed indefinitely due to safety violations.
Luna Park stated that the Cyclone, a historic rollercoaster opened in 1927, is habitually maintained and is now undergoing repairs after receiving multiple safety code violations from the city's Department of Buildings.
The Department of Buildings identified a crack on the chain sprocket as the reason for the malfunction and also cited Luna Park for failing to maintain the ride properly.
The Cyclone has a storied history, reflecting the ups and downs of Coney Island, having faced deterioration and closure threats but also restoration efforts in the past.
