At a recent meeting, the NYC City Planning Commission approved two major rezoning plans aimed at increasing housing and commercial space in Brooklyn. The Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan is set to bring 4,600 new apartments, including affordable units, and create around 2,800 jobs. Despite the positive outlook, some commissioners like Osorio expressed concerns that the reliance on Mandatory Inclusionary Housing may not adequately address affordable housing needs. Additionally, a proposal for a mixed-use development on Empire Blvd was also approved, aimed at revitalizing the local economy.
The plan was approved by a 11-2 vote, with Commissioners Leah Goodridge and Juan Osorio voting against the rezoning.
Osorio said "defaulting to MIH wasn't enough" to secure affordable housing.
Michael Berfield, a principal at Bridges Development Group, told BK Reader in an email that the project was a "win-win" for the community.
The neighborhood's existing zoning is "restrictive," which has left it "unequipped" to deal with the demand for housing, he said.
