Buses on a main Brooklyn street average just 4 mph. Here's how NYC wants to fix it.

""It's busy. It's terrible," said one rider aboard the B41 Limited. The average speed of the bus? A snail's pace of just 4 mph."

""We hear the same thing over and over again: Riders are waiting too long to board crowded buses that are stuck in traffic," said Jolyse Race, of the Riders Alliance."

""One side of the street at a time, so we can keep it open to general traffic," said NYC Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn. "There's a little bit of short term pain for that long term gain.""

Work is underway on Flatbush Avenue to enhance bus service, particularly for the B41 Limited, which currently averages just 4 mph. The Flatbush Bus plan aims to create bus-only center lanes from Livingston Street to Grand Army Plaza, benefiting six bus routes. The project, which began in 2022, is expected to open in Fall 2026. Riders have long complained about slow service, and the city plans to minimize disruptions during construction while implementing passenger islands for easier boarding.
