In 2016, at the age of 18, Nicholas Miranda-Newberry signed up to be a donor with DKMS after seeing an advertisement on Facebook. Five years later, he learned he was a match for Elijah John, who had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Miranda-Newberry recalled feeling shocked yet happy to have the chance to save a life, saying, "I had forgotten I signed up, but I felt happy that I had the chance to save a person's life."
After donating his bone marrow in 2021, Nicholas Miranda-Newberry met Elijah John three years later atop Manhattan's Pier 57 rooftop park. John expressed his gratitude, stating, "It finally feels good to meet my hero. I beat cancer thanks to Nicholas. Not all heroes wear capes, but Nicholas deserves one. I don't know how to thank him, to show how grateful I am for what he did for me."
The connection between Miranda-Newberry and John is deepened by their life-changing encounter, with both expressing their newfound bond. Miranda-Newberry stated, "I'm glad I could help," while John advised others to become donors, saying, "You have the chance to save someone's life." This encounter not only showcased the impact of one person’s decision to donate but also highlighted how such actions can foster lifelong bonds.
