After a Sept. 17 fire devastated the Red Hook waterfront community, residents raised nearly to help artists and businesses rebuild. When a man was pushed in front of a subway train in January, the local community raised more than for Joe Lynskey's medical bills."
Kings County ranked fifth nationally for generosity in 2025, reflecting deep-rooted mutual aid, solidarity and grassroots giving in Brooklyn. Residents contributed at high rates, averaging 2.5 donations per second during mounting natural disasters, economic pressures and emergencies. New York State ranked fifth for repeat donors, indicating sustained philanthropic engagement. Brooklyn fundraisers included campaigns for Red Hook waterfront recovery after a Sept. 17 fire, medical bills for Joe Lynskey after a subway assault, memorial and family support for 7-year-old Devon Wong, support for the children of security officer Aland Etienne, and nearly $220,000 raised for artist Jacolby Satterwhite's prosthetic infection treatment. Global trends included tripling support for volunteers, doubled school-supply fundraising and $330 million for national disaster relief.
