Brooklyn College becomes first CUNY campus to begin state Decarbonization Leadership Program
Briefly

Brooklyn College has started a geothermal test as the first CUNY campus moving away from fossil fuels. The project, celebrated on World Environment Day, involves converting the West End Building into a geothermal heating and cooling system, funded by a $10 million award. Drilling began to assess geothermal potential as part of a broader decarbonization initiative with the New York Power Authority, aimed at reducing carbon emissions in major energy facilities. Other CUNY colleges are also participating in similar sustainability efforts.
Brooklyn College's West End Building will be fully converted to a geothermal heating and cooling system, marking a significant shift away from fossil fuels.
The test drilling paves the way for a comprehensive, low-carbon energy system on campus, supporting CUNY's commitment to sustainability.
