FDNY Assistant Chief Tom Currao described the incident as a "powerful explosion, ripped right through the dwelling," highlighting the significant structural damage it caused.
Currao expressed that the firefighters found victims in serious condition and that the explosion caused "very significant damage" to both the building and surrounding area.
Concerns over the building's stability were raised, with Currao stating, "Windows that were blown out. The back, the structural part of the building actually is damaged and blown out."
Despite the ongoing investigation by the fire marshal, neighbors reported a strong gas smell after the explosion, hinting at a possible cause.
